Canine Companions for Independence provides highly trained dogs to assist adults and children with disabilities. Founded in 1975, CCI is the largest nonprofit of its type in the country and the first to receive full accreditation by Assistance Dogs International.
We ensure the success and longevity of each human-canine partnership by carefully matching each participant to the dog that best fits his or her unique needs and circumstances. The result is a miracle - a life full of increased independence and loving companionship.
The process of providing highly trained assistance dogs begins with CCI's breeding and puppy raising programs. CCI Puppies are born in the homes of volunteer breeder caretakers. These volunteers provide permanent homes to CCI's breeder dogs and nurture newborn pups until they reach about eight weeks of age. The pups are then placed with volunteer puppy raisers for the next 13 to 18 months. They receive lots of love and attention and learn basic obedience. They also have plenty of opportunities to socialize with people in a variety of public settings. As healthy, happy, confident young dogs, they are ready for their next step – Advanced Training at a CCI region center.

In Loving Memory of Nasha

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we tell you of the passing of Nasha. She was in training with Canine Companions for Independence to become a “Hearing Assistance” dog. Nasha lost a gallant fight against a very aggressive form of cancer and she died peacefully on April 17th, 2008 surrounded by the people who loved and cherished her. She has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and will be greatly missed by all of us here at SlackTax, Inc. She will be remembered fondly as the dog with a kind and gentle soul.
